Slides Aren’t Just for Kids…Or Are They?: A 40 year-old Connecticut man thought he was having a good time on a playground with his kids. Apparently, he got “wedged feet and head first down a slide" while "stuck in the middle portion.” Ouch. Talking about getting taco’ed in a tube slide on a HOT August day. 🌮 But firefighters saved the day. After dismantling the slide, they were able to pull the unidentified man to safety. ⛑️ Playground Safety: Navigating Licensing & Regulatory Requirements

When creating a safe playground environment, it’s better to go beyond best practices and understand the legal and licensing frameworks in play (pun intended). We spent time digging up some guidelines to help highlight what requirements exist.

1. Federal Guidelines and Voluntary Standards

In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes the Public Playground Safety Handbook, offering key guidance on equipment layout, surfacing, and hazard mitigation. They created a handbook which you can access 👉➡️👉➡️ HERE!

2. State-Level Licensing and Installer Requirements

Did you know that 28 U.S. states require registration or licensing for contractors installing playgrounds, treating them like other public-safety-critical trades? This can add another layer of complexity for licensing needs.

Check if your state is one of 28 that has additional guidelines 🦺👉➡️ HERE

Why Does This Matter?

Safety regulations are more than suggestions—they’re frameworks that shape legal liability, licensing and operational integrity. Whether adopting federal standards voluntarily, complying with state installer requirements, or maintaining certified inspections, adherence helps protect kids but also can help minimize your liability exposure.

Oh, and let’s just make a rule that no parents are allowed on slides. 😜

ECE In The News

🛻 Toyota Gets it: Toyota is taking steps to support working parents as they add four, all-new childcare centers across their manufacturing footprint. New centers will serve parents in North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and West Virginia. They are building upon their two existing ECE centers in partnership with a 3rd party provider. You can read more HERE!

🏥 Hospital Closes ECE Center: While Toyota is expanding access to care, others aren’t so lucky. Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital decided to close its center in Lincoln, NE with a licensed capacity of 125. It cut roughly 1.5% of its workforce due to rising costs and decreasing government funds.
